What a Wind Rating Actually Measures

A wind rating is not a prediction of what wind speed a roof can survive in the real world. It is the result of a standardized uplift test: panels are installed on a test rig, and pressure is applied from underneath until something fails, whether that is a fastener pulling through, a clip releasing, or a seam separating. The rating describes resistance to uplift pressure under those test conditions, and it only means anything if the roof was actually installed the way the tested assembly was installed, with the same clips, fasteners, and spacing.

Standing Seam vs. Exposed Fastener Metal

The two common metal roofing systems perform very differently in wind, and the difference comes down to how the panel is attached. Exposed fastener panels are screwed directly through the face of the panel, through a rubber gasket that seals around each screw. Every one of those gaskets is a future failure point; they harden and crack with age and sun exposure, and once one lets go, wind gets underneath the panel from that point. Standing seam panels attach with concealed clips underneath the seam, with no fastener penetrating the panel face at all. There is no gasket to fail, and the interlocking seam distributes uplift load across the whole panel rather than concentrating it at individual screw holes. On a coastal roof taking wind and salt air for decades, that difference compounds.

What Coastal NC Actually Requires

North Carolina's building code sets required wind resistance by location, using design wind speed maps that assign higher speeds to coastal counties than to inland ones. Onslow County and the rest of the coast generally fall well above the state average. Matching the Panel to the Site

The panel gauge, clip spacing, and fastening pattern that satisfy a wind rating on paper are not one fixed spec. Corners and roof edges see significantly higher uplift pressure than the middle of a roof plane, so a proper installation tightens clip spacing in those zones rather than running one uniform pattern across the whole roof. A manufacturer's wind-rated installation instructions account for this; skipping that detail to save labor is how a wind-rated product still fails in a storm, because the rating was never actually achieved on that roof in the first place.

Salt Air Is a Separate Problem From Wind

A panel can be correctly rated and correctly installed for wind and still corrode from salt exposure if the coating system and fastener material were not chosen for a coastal environment. Galvalume and properly coated aluminum hold up well; the wrong coating, or the wrong grade of fastener at the clips, starts to fail years before the panel itself would otherwise need replacing. Once a fastener corrodes and loosens, the wind rating it was tested with no longer applies, because the assembly is not the assembly that was tested anymore.

Reading the Rating Number Itself

Wind uplift ratings on metal roofing products are usually expressed against a testing standard, and the number attached to that standard tells you the pressure the assembly withstood in testing, not a wind speed in miles per hour. Two products can both carry an impressive sounding rating and still perform very differently on an actual roof, because the number only describes the tested assembly: that specific panel, that specific clip, at that specific spacing. Change any one of those in the field to save cost, and the number on the spec sheet no longer describes what is actually on your roof.

This is why the installer matters as much as the product. A correctly specified panel installed with the wrong clip spacing performs like a lower rated system, whatever the box says. Ask what testing standard a quoted system was rated under and whether the installation plan for your roof, including the tighter spacing at corners and edges, matches what that testing actually covered.
